macOS Tahoe is the final software update that Intel-based Macs will get, as Apple works to phase them out following its transition to Apple silicon.

During its Platforms State of the Union event, Apple said that Intel Macs won't get macOS 27, coming next year, though there could still be updates that add security fixes.

Support for Intel Macs is being phased out because Apple wants to put all of its focus and innovation on Apple silicon machines.

Apple started its transition to Apple silicon with the 2020 launch of the M1 Mac machines, and two years ago, the company completed the transition to Apple silicon.

Wow, I really object to Apple saying this (even if kind of obvious). It's a massive hint for developers to just go ahead and drop Intel now – "what's another year, anyway?" Same kind of BS Apple was doing in the move from PowerPC to Intel to enforce planned obsolescence of those PowerPC Macs. They ended up handicapped really quickly by both Apple and app developers not supporting them which likely resulted in a lot more stress and ewaste.

Of course, it would be nice if some of the bugs were actually fixed. Some of my feedback dates back to before Arm machines were even available, yet at the current trajectory they'll probably never be fixed on Intel machines

This… this was expectable, honestly. The day we all knew was coming, since the days the first Apple Silicon Mac’s were rumored, back in… well, they’ve been rumored since ancient times, but especially since 2018 and 2019… So, nothing new here.

Also, the macs supported this year are really fortunate because they are getting a big redesign, a nice update with nice features, and three years (26, and two more) of remaining security updates.

Frankly, I expected Apple to drop all intel support with Sequoia, but I do have to say it’s nice they didn’t. Might squeeze an extra year out of my 16” 2019. Still a great machine.

I wouldnt be surprised to see a successor project eventually start though to do the same for deprecated ARM macs in the late ‘20s early ‘30s

Well,

They released their last PowerPC mac in 2005, last major ppc os release in 2007, last minor update in 2009

They supported 32 bit Intel cpu's less than that, I'd say if they can release 2+ years of security updates after 2026 (which they do anyway,) then they handled the transition perfectly, gave devs more then 5 years to convert their apps. Gave people more than 5 years to upgrade and etc. Intel mac pro will probably be 9-10 years old when they release the last security patch for Tahoe

If Tahoe leaves Intel machines in a good spot like Leopard for PowerPC, I’m ok with it. If Tahoe cripples Macs with bugs at its last update, and Apple wipes their hands, that’ll be a pretty bad look. May they take the high-honor path here.

All in on Apple Silicon, because I remember holding out on a 2004 iBook before my 2008 aluminum MacBook. It was a drastic change from the past to the future, and it was awesome.

Needless to say, the Midnight MacBook Air blows my 2015 MacBook Pro out of the water. It’s a bittersweet transition, but the future looks as bright as the last one. Bring it on!

I'm referring to the announcement, not the fact that MacOS 26 is the last to support Intel (which again, is likely pretty obvious to most). Apple normally never announces things like this so far in advance.

And that’s okay. If your 2020 Intel iMac is doing what you need it to do then no worries. Also no worries if you don't care about new improved software and security. Computing in the past is your choice but don’t expect sympathy if you get nailed.

It means that after Tahoe is released, Apple is going to stop compiling macOS to x64 and that's that. OCLP can hopefully patch those unsupported systems to be able to run Tahoe and then support it for a few years before Tahoe becomes unsupported at all by Apple, probably 2029 or 2030.
